Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho has been diagnosed with possible kidney or lung disease.

One of his lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, made this known in an interview with BBC Yoruba, noting that the rights activist developed the disease in custody of the Benin Republic prison.

According to him, the agitator has also been seriously ill and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

PUNCH had reported that Igboho is currently in a detention center in the Republic of Benin.

La Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, home of the pro-Yoruba self-determination activist was invaded by DSS men around 1:30 am on July 1, 2021, leading to the arrest of 12 of his aides, while Igboho managed to escape arrest.

Igboho was later arrested in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, on July 16, 2021, with his wife, while traveling to Germany and has been detained ever since.

The lawyer raised the alarm that Igboho needed urgent medical attention, saying: “Igboho was not diagnosed with this disease before being arrested in Cotonou. He was so critical that they had to take him to the hospital.

“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.

Naija News reports that the Department of State Services (DSS) on Tuesday released Agu from custody of him. This was confirmed by the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, in a statement made available to this platform today.

She recalls that the Nigerian army arrested Agu last week around Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra state, for allegedly wearing a Biafra suit while he distributed bread and other items to the poor.

The actor was accused by the army of requesting support for the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Hours after Agu was released from DSS custody, Omokri in a post on a social media platform revealed that Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Mike Ozekhome was instrumental in the veteran’s release.

Sharing a photo of Agu and Ozekhome, Omokri wrote: “Always grateful to Mike Ozekhome for being instrumental in the release of Chiwetalu Agu after his unjust and illegal arrest by a repressive regime that celebrates Gumi for promoting terrorists and denigrates Agu for expressing his freedom of thought through his clothing.
