Low turnout, EVM Corruption, Among Others, Kaduna LG Elections GCFRNG
By Ibrahim Wuyo, Kaduna
As local government elections took place in 19 local government areas in Kaduna state on Saturday, there were complaints of poor voter elections, electronic voting machine (EVM) and the late arrival of election officials in some polling units from across the Local Government Areas
However, police and other security personnel were stationed at key locations where they were monitoring the election, without recording any major problems.
In the case of unrest in some constituencies it is not necessary and does not affect the conduct of the election.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai who voted in Ungwan Sarkin polling Unit 1 in Kaduna North local government, saw a small turnout of voters and asked the voters to come out and elect the people they want.
The governor said there was a huge improvement in the system compared to LG’s 2018 elections.
El-Rufai reiterated his decision to run in the by-elections in the state, saying “we will not act like other parties or other state governments ruled by the ruling party. We will give the people of Kaduna state a chance.” We don’t have to win everywhere, even though we are working for the people of Kaduna State, they have seen our mark, the government and the local government everywhere, they have seen it, and we are convinced that the people All sensible people will vote for us.
“We do not believe in cheating, we do not believe in electoral fraud, but we do not believe that others should deceive us. That is why we encourage SIECOM to come up with a better system and everything I like.”
He said, “Technology is the key to reducing fraud in elections. Unless we have a credible election, we cannot have good leaders, leaders will be held accountable. That is why we are trying. “Even if it means we will lose in some areas, this is democracy, it is a gradual process,” he said.
Speaking at the polling station, the Kaduna North election official said they have started distributing the ballot papers from 5:30 am to the LG level and things are looking up.
However, he said the construction of the machine was as challenging as people thought the same machine would be used for the 2018 elections during Saturday’s election.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State has said that the election was marred by irregularities.
Speaking at a press conference, the party’s public relations officer, Mr Abraham Alberah Catoh and Dr Abdul rahman Usman, accused the state election team of supporting the APC.
The PDP has accused the Kaduna Youth Commissioner (KADSIECOM) of setting up electronic voting machines to support the APC.
They said they would not accept the election results that SIECOM would announce for its results to be fraught with error.
They said, “This election was held to give the APC more opportunity than others.”
