Birmingham City Council Bankruptcy to be Investigated

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove has revealed plans to designate commissioners to assume control of Birmingham City Council and initiate a local investigation into the authority following its declaration of effective insolvency. The cabinet minister stated that he was convinced that Birmingham City Council was not meeting its obligation for best value, particularly after issuing a Section 114 notice. He further explained, “In accordance with the Local Government Act 1999, I am thus informing the council of my intention to intervene by appointing commissioners. Additionally, I plan to commence a local inquiry in due course. These decisions are not made lightly, but they are crucial to safeguard the interests of Birmingham’s residents and taxpayers, as well as to provide ongoing assurance to the entire local government sector.”
