ABUJA: The Middle Belt Forum, MBF, has raised the alarm about an alleged new assassination attempt on the governor of Benue state, Dr. Samuel Ortom.
The Forum alleged that some unscrupulous elements were after the life of the Governor after his insistence on prosecuting the anti-open grazing law in the state and his recent position on the rotation of power towards the southern part of the country.
MBF National President Dr. Pogu Bitrus, who raised the alarm in a statement he personally signed and obtained by Vanguard on Sunday in Abuja, called on Nigerians and the international community to hold President Muhammadu Buhari accountable should the governor suffers some damage.
Dr Bitrus revealed that some undemocratic forces are alleged to be working clandestinely to instigate the crisis with the sole objective of having the Federal Government impose a state of emergency on Benue.
He said: “We wish to draw the attention of Nigerians and the international community that what is currently happening in Benue could become a dress rehearsal for another deadly round of violence.
“In the event of any destruction unleashed in Benue State or any damage done to Governor Ortom, the Middle Belt will hold President Buhari accountable.”
According to the statement, “The attention of the Middle Belt Forum, MBF, has been drawn to the alleged threats to the life of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State by forces opposing his clear and persistent stance against outdoor grazing. of cattle in Nigeria, especially in the Middle Belt region.
“More infuriating to those conspiring against the governor of Benue is his insistence that the 2023 presidency should not be retained by the North; position that was recently adopted by the Forum at its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Akwanga, Nasarawa state.
In addition to being the clear symbol of what the Middle Belt stands for, the irrepressible governor of Benue has been at the forefront in calling out criminal elements involved in carrying out murderous assaults on our communities, which have led to the destruction of hundreds of our towns and villages.
“Some of our people are forced to seek refuge in various camps for internally displaced persons, internally displaced persons, which are poorly served by some state governments and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
Despite pressure and threat from those determined to continue the bloodbath culture and mass destruction by the brutal and armed Fulani militia, Governor Ortom has stood firm in the defense of his people by insist that the law against open grazing can never be reversed.
“It is in a clear recognition of the imperatives of free range grazing as a means to end the bloodbath in Benue state and other Middle Belt states that southern governors also banned free range grazing to stop the rising avalanche of bloodshed and destruction associated with the activities of the shepherds.
Considering Governor Ortom’s irreversible determination to support his people in the southward rotation of power in 2023 and his strong opposition to repeal the law against open grazing, it is alleged that anti-democratic forces are working clandestinely to instigate the crisis with the only one with the objective of the Federal Government imposing a state of emergency on Benue.
”As the umbrella organization for ethnic nationalities in the Middle Belt region, the Forum condemns all forms of provocation in any guise that may threaten the current fragile peace in the state.
“We call on rioters acting at the behest of opposing security forces not only in Benue state, but also in the Middle Belt region to quickly sheathe their sword. We are also calling on the security agencies to intervene and arrest the Fulani herdsmen who have taken over various parts of the Guma local government area, where Governor Ortom hails from.
Security agents must pay close attention to the activities of these murderous herdsmen to prevent further waves of genocidal attacks and property destruction not only in Benue, but also in the Middle Belt and across the country. President Muhammadu Buhari should take his responsibility for protecting vulnerable communities from these human carnage.
”The law against open grazing that was successfully passed by the Benue legislators must be respected by the federal government as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
“We wish to draw the attention of Nigerians and the international community that what is happening now in Benue could become a dress rehearsal for another deadly round of violence. In the event of any destruction in Benue State or damage to Governor Ortom, the Middle Belt will hold President Buhari accountable.
”We want to say in no uncertain terms that Governor Ortom is not responsible for the current insecurity plaguing the state of Benue and the nation at large.
“The forces behind our security nightmares are these ruthless and ruthless murderous shepherds whose desire is to conquer our land and take over our communities.
“What our nation’s security forces should do now is go after these bloodthirsty criminals who have turned our communities into a vast extermination camp. President Buhari should stop the orchestrated massacre of our people in the phantom name of the confrontations between farmers and shepherds.
